History of TVRI

The name of state deserved by Television of the Republic of Indonesia as broadcasting institution refers to the meaning that by means of the name its broadcast is dedicated to the state interest. From the time of establishment on August 24, 1962, TVRI has carried out the task in its capacity as television broadcasting institution which raises the national image through the broadcasting of the event of international scale to promote the advancement of social life and to become social adhesive.

Dynamics of life of Television of the Republic of Indonesia is the dynamics of national struggle in the process of leaving the democracy. On August 24, 1962 in the era of Guided Democracy, TVRI took the form of Foundation established to broadest the openning ceremony of Asian Games IV in Jakarta.

Furthermore, entering the era of Pancasila Democracy in 1974, TVRI changed into one of the units of organization and working procedure of Department of Information under the status as Directorate responsible to Director General of Radio, Television, and Film.

In the reformation era, Government Regulation of the Republic of Indonesia Number 36 Year 2000, establishing the status of TVRI as Service Company under the guidance of Department of Finance, was issued. Thereafter, by means of Government Regulation Number 9 Year 2002, TVRI changed its status into PT. TVRI (State Limited Liability Company) under the guidance of the Office of State Minister for State Owned Business Agency.

Furthermore, by means of Act of the Republic of Indonesia Number 32 Year 2002 on Broadcasting, TVRI is determined as Public Broadcasting Institution in the form of corporate body established by the state. The spirit underlying the emergence of TVRI as Public Broadcasting Institution is to serve information for the public interest, which shall be neutral, independent, and non commercial.

Government Regulation of the Republic of Indonesia Number 13 Year 2005 determines that TVRI performs the duty to render information service, sound education and entertainment service, to conduct controlling function and to become social adhesive, as well as to preserve the national culture for the sake of all the social strata by means of television broadcasting which reachs all over the territory of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia.
